Pros of Studying in Taiwan
Hello Taiwan, my name is Shambel Abate Marye (桑柏爾), and I am from Ethiopia. Since arriving in Taiwan in 2019 to pursue my master’s degree at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in a rich tapestry of cultural, social, and academic experiences. Taiwan, a small yet vibrant island, offers a unique blend of traditional heritage and modern innovation. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, bustling cities, and world-class semiconductor research facilities.
I spent two wonderful years living in Taipei, during which I began my journey to learn the Chinese language. At first, everything felt unfamiliar—the cuisine, the customs, the language, and even the way people interacted. To bridge this gap, I made an effort to build friendships with locals, share meals with them, and explore various cities across Taiwan. This experience not only helped me acclimate to my new surroundings but also deepened my appreciation for Taiwanese culture.
Upon completing my master’s degree at NTUST, I transitioned to the National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Hsinchu to embark on a PhD program. Hsinchu, known as the “Windy City,” is located in northwestern Taiwan and is a major hub for semiconductor manufacturing. It hosts prominent industrial centers like the Hsinchu Science Park, home to the headquarters of TSMC and MediaTek, among others. Beyond its industrial prowess, Hsinchu is also renowned for its academic excellence, boasting two of Taiwan’s top research institutions: NYCU and National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), both situated near the science park.
I am majoring in the International College of Semiconductor Technology (ICST). This prestigious and pivotal department is instrumental in shaping my future career in the semiconductor industry here in Taiwan. The ICST at my university is recognized for its cutting-edge research, state-of-the-art facilities, and strong industry connections, making it an ideal place for anyone aspiring to excel in this field.
Taiwan is globally renowned as one of the leading countries in the semiconductor industry, often referred to as the “Silicon Valley of Asia.” It is home to major industry giants such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and MediaTek, which play crucial roles in the global supply chain for semiconductor technology. Being at the forefront of semiconductor innovation, Taiwan offers unparalleled opportunities for hands-on learning and professional growth in this sector.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this dynamic and forward-thinking department at a university that is deeply integrated with Taiwan’s thriving semiconductor ecosystem. The curriculum at ICST covers the fundamental principles of semiconductor technology and delves into the latest advancements and practical applications in the field. This comprehensive educational experience equips me with the knowledge and skills necessary to significantly impact the semiconductor industry.
Being in Taiwan, with its robust infrastructure, extensive research and development capabilities, and a vibrant community of industry professionals and academics, I am confident that I am in the right department, at the right university, and in the right country to advance my career in semiconductors. This unique combination of academic excellence and industry relevance provides me with the perfect environment to achieve my professional goals and contribute to the future of semiconductor technology.
At NYCU, I’ve had access to a variety of Chinese language courses designed to help students enhance their Mandarin skills. One particularly exciting aspect of my language learning experience has been the personalized one-on-one tutoring offered by the Chinese Language Division at the Language Teaching and Research Center. This individualized approach has proven to be extremely effective in improving my Mandarin proficiency. Additionally, the conversation circle, which facilitates language exchange between local and international students, has been an invaluable resource for practicing my speaking skills.
Through consistent engagement in these language programs and the supportive learning environment at NYCU, I have significantly improved my Mandarin. This journey has not only enhanced my communication skills but also enriched my overall experience in Taiwan.
