I am an international student from Thailand. Living in Taiwan has provided me with great experiences, both academic and cultural understanding. At National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), a variety of Chinese language courses are available to help students improve their Mandarin skills. Through consistent engagement in these courses, I have continually improved my Mandarin proficiency. After spending about three years in Taiwan, my language proficiency has significantly improved. I scored a TOCFL test from A2 to B2. The environment here supports Mandarin learning through constant interaction with local students, teachers, and people. Actively engaging in activities held by the university has also helped me improve a lot.
Furthermore, NYCU goes beyond traditional classroom instruction by offering classes such as learning Chinese through songs and cooking shows, which make learning Mandarin more interesting. The university also offers Chinese tables where teachers introduce Taiwanese cultures and lifestyles, and Chinese salons where we participate in activities such as making lanterns and cooking Taiwanese cuisine such as zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. These activities enhance my understanding of Taiwanese culture while developing my Chinese language proficiency.
As an international student here, it is like a journey of continuous learning and adapting to a new culture. Taiwan is an ideal place for international students to thrive, and the university’s atmosphere ensures that students not only gain knowledge but also develop a profound appreciation for Taiwan’s traditions.
